![]() She writes about writers particularly well, whether that is the trio at the core of Five Tuesdays in Winter, or the quietly determined Casey, who is surrounded by cocksure male novelists who believe they are destined for greatness. “I did draw on my own emotional experiences of being a young writer, very broke and having no place to live,” she says. It sounds similar to the way Casey, her heroine in Writers & Lovers, keeps herself afloat. She then spent almost a decade moving across the US, trying to make ends meet working in bookshops, restaurants and schools before publishing her first novel in 1999.
